[ guess who foregoes texting back to just bulldoze her way into ruby's room?

Ruby, what's happening? [ she scans the room for potential threats like grimm or betties or anything, but only finds her anxious looking teenage sister. ] ...are--are you okay? You did send me a text for help, right?

[As if Ruby wasn't already freaking out about the messages coming through on her Fluid. She let's out a yelp when Yang bursts into her room and tosses her fluid across the room.

There are no monsters. There are no Betties. There isn't even a Godzilla.]

Y-yeah-Yang!

[She gets up from her bed and moves to shake her sisters shoulders.]

The other day when we were texting. You know about the guy who was outside!? I didn't think you were right but you were!

[ again with the shaking. she stares back at ruby with a concerned, confused frown on her face as she's rocked back and forth. they text about plenty of things, most of it mundane in nature. which--

oh. oh, the boy. wait, she'd been right? oh, Brothers. was her sister dating????

yang slips out of ruby's hold easily, shaking her shoulders in turn. ]

Of course, I was right, but tell me what happened! You have to give me the juicy details!

Well- How was I supposed to know that you were right!? I thought you were wrong!

[And now she’s being shaken by her sister. As if she didn’t have enough emotions going on without motion sickness.]

I don’t know-

It happened really fast-

One second he was being kind of mopey and I was trying to cheer him up-

Then he sent me a text saying I meant a lot to him-

Then I freaked out and dropped my fluid

Then I sent you that text-

Then I started texting him back because I didn’t know what to do-

Then he called!-

And I pretended he got voice mail bit it didn’t work—!

Then we talked for a little and-

I guess we’re figuring things out?

[ her sister is dating.

Brothers. yang isn't ready for this. ruby is just a baby! well, not technically a baby, she's 17 and dating at that age is all well and good, but this is her little sister! she eats grimm-shaped chicken nuggets! she loves comic books and bad science experiments! ruby is--she's--!

growing up in front of her eyes.

she stops shaking ruby to pull her into a tight hug. ] Look at you two being awkward and cute at the same time! [ yang then smoothly transitions putting her in a very loose headlock and mussing up her hair. ] I told you so, by the way!

[Ruby is relieved to have the shaking stop, but she doesn't have a chance to get over dizziness before she finds herself pulled into the hug.]

I-I mean-I guess. I don't really know what I'm doing. I've never done anything like this before-

[And she never really had much of an interest in giving it a shot until all this happened. She just had bigger things to worry about. Other things that interested her.

Not that she has much time to think about that. She's only just about to try and hug her sister back when she finds herself in a head lock and her hair getting messed around.]

Y-yang! Okay! Okay! You told me so! I get it!

You better get it!

[ not to be confused for the sisterly encouragement of 'git it!' that can wait for a while.

yang releases ruby from her hold and steps away, hands in her pockets and bouncing on the balls of her feet. she might not know the boy (yet. she'll work on that later.), but she knows her sister. someone who's experienced so many hardships and has the weight of the world on her shoulders already.... ruby deserves this innocent happiness and then some. and anything that can make her sister happy makes her happy. ]

Figuring stuff out is a big step. A lot bigger than some people think. How're you feeling about it? You seem a little...keyed up.

I do, I promise I do.

[Ruby let's out a sigh of relief as Yang finally let's go of her. She appreciates the sisterly affection but she's probably going to be feeling that for a couple days. She can't help but smile to see her sister so happy for her. Yang was the best. She really was.

Ruby rubs her shoulder nervously when Yang asks the question.]

Yeah, I think I'm starting to figure that out. I don't know how anyone figures this out.

I'm feeling... A lot. Over whelmed? It's confusing. I don't know.

I just never really took the time to think about it. We've had so much on the go at home. I didn't think something like this was something I'd get into. Fate or the world stuff and all that.

And well, this place isn't paradise or anything but it's slower than how things were at home. There isn't as much pressure on us specifically to fix things here. I've had time for things we don't really get time to do back home.

[She side steps actually talking about Varian for the moment. She's really not sure how to describe just how or why she feels the way she does right at that second. If she stalls she might get a better idea.]

I know what you mean. We've been on the go nonstop since Beacon so it's just weird to have all this extra time. And yeah, there's plenty of things here that wanna kill us, but how is that any different from home? [ it says a lot about remnant that yang can joke about that with a bright grin. ]

As for the other stuff.... [ she makes a big show of flopping onto ruby's bed, fluffing a few of the pillows so they're extra squishy. most people would ask if they could have a seat, but she and ruby are the best siblings ever. they've been invading each others' spaces without asking since they were kids and yang sure isn't about to break that tradition now. ] Might be easier to talk if we're comfortable, yeah?

I mean... It's actually a little easier than it is back home. There are a lot more people trying to figure out what's going on here.

It's just weird and well nice to have the chance to breath.

[She watches her sister get comfortable and quickly jumps in beside her. Cuddling up nice and closer to her favorite sibling. She wasn't about to complain about her spending some quality time with her. She loved her and really appreciated having her around to talk to. Even if she occasionally drove her a little crazy.]

Yeah, loads...

[She took a moment get herself comfy before she started to talk again.]

He's really nice, but kind of an awkward dork. He's got an adorable chunky raccoon named Ruddiger, he gets along with Zwei pretty well.

[Oops. Zwei may have met him before Yang.]

You introduced this guy to Zwei before me?! I'm hurt, Rubes! [ that arm slung around ruby's shoulders should indicate that she isn't upset in the slightest. ]

And yeah, it can be intense when you're in the "figuring things out" part, [ yang continues in a gentler tone. ] You're excited, terrified, anxious, everything. For me, it felt like I was gonna vibrate right out of my skin. There were a couple of times I trying way too hard to be the best...whatever we were.

Of course, Blake called me out on it. [ she chuckles to herself, gaze turning soft at just the mention of her name. ] That's what a good partner will do. They'll balance you out. And if you say he's really nice then he's gotta be a great guy. He'll let you know how things are going. You just have to put your trust in him.

I didn't! He kidnapped Zwei. There's a difference!

[Hopefully her playful tone indicates that Zwei was not in any danger. And that fact that she is now going out with this guy. She leans into her sister and wraps an arm around her waist as she leans in to get more comfy.

She listens to Yang and the dumbfounded expression on her face told that Yang pretty much had the feelings she was going through pretty well pegged.]

...How long does it take to get like less like this?

[Ruby says as she's like 5-10 minutes into this tops.]

I mean-Okay. That's not the best question to ask- I just feel like I've been blindsided by a bajillion emotions that all want to get through this tiny door and there's no way they can all fit through it.

[She considers the next bit briefly before talking. She holds onto her sister a little tighter at the mention of Blake. She missed her and she could only imagine how much her sister did too.]

So it's kind of like we're on a team then...?

[That was a simpler way to think of this.]

[ kidna--okay, yang is going to put a pin in that for now, but don't think they aren't going to have a talk about why their beloved dog was snatched from their home! after she leans into that hug, anyway. while she's doing miles better than she was, the small show of comfort is appreciated. ]

I...don't know, [ yang groans, lightly thumping her head into one of the pillows. ] We never got the past the "we'll see where this goes" part. I guess it gets better when you're actually together? Or maybe those feelings don't go away, but they get easier to deal with? Dating's hard.

[ she is doing an excellent job at this "provide emotional support" thing. ]

Exactly like a team. You have to talk, work together through the hard stuff, come up with 100 backup strategies in case Grimm show up out of nowhere...you're the best at all of those. You guys are gonna do great.

[Ruby knew Yang was doing better but she could only imagine how a reminder of not having Blake around could sting. She let her head rest against Yang's as they both relaxed.

She frowned only now realizing that she was going to treading into unfamiliar territory if Yang didn't know how things went beyond this.]

Yeah, I'm getting the impression it is. ...Well I guess it's up to me to see how that goes now?

I-I'm sure sure she misses you a whole lot right now.

[It might not be the emotional support Ruby had hoped for, but it's helped put things into perspective for Ruby. And she can appreciate that.]

Right. Yeah, I guess I am alright at those. I have a good big sister I can lean on in case things don't go exactly as planned either.

[ the realization that ruby is going to be the first sibling to have any kind of sustained dating experience under her many anime protagonist belts hits like a truck. yang has failed in her duties. she will...have to ask ruby for dating advice one day.

You'll have to tell me what it's like on the other side, [ she laughs before sobering. ] And I'm sure Weiss misses you a ton, too, even if she'll act like she doesn't. [ weiss's sensible, grounding presence has been sorely missed around the house and yang is sure ruby must miss her ten times as much. their dynamic isn't something that can be replicated, after all. ]

Hey, you're not just "alright at those"! You're the best! And as the best, I'm gonna give you all the backup you need! [ she gently bumps her head into ruby's. ] So you're welcome, Ruby. Anytime.

[For all the things Ruby came to Yang for different types of advice. It was about time that she had one thing up on her sister. She didn't expect it to be something like this.]

Other side of what? Is there like some sort of emotional or literal relationship road I have to cross? Is there like an it's okay to cross sign on it? Or do I have to watch out for transport trucks on it?

[This is who Yang may have to come to for advice one day.]

Yeah, but that's how Weiss acts to all of us. You and Blake had something special, I know that.

[Just holds onto her sister a little tighter.]

Well I'm going to need all the back up I can get, I'm counting on you, Yang.

[And she'll nuzzle her forehead against her sisters. She loves her so much.]

impending future bad advice aside, yang just rolls her eyes. of course she'd go to the extreme. ] Not a literal road. More of an emotional one. I'm pretty sure there aren't any trucks on it, either, so you don't have to worry about that.

You got it. Prepare to be backed up! [ a beat. ] Plus, you have to let me dress you up when you go out on your first official date, too. It's sibling law.

[Rip Yang.

Ruby just gives an awkward smile.]

You don't know that. Trucks could have emotional baggage too. Maybe they really miss their friends and don't know if they'll see them at the next truck stop or not.

[She's missing the point here.]

Rig-Wait. That's an actual thing?

[Yang had helped her pick up out her dress for the Beacon dance... So it didn't seem to out there.]

Fine-But I still want to be able to wear my hood and no weird heel deathtraps.

Those trucks sound like they're hauling a lot of baggage. [ it's perfectly acceptable for ruby to smother yang with a pillow for that terrible joke or the shit eating grin on her face at her flawless delivery. ]

Yup, it's an actual thing! [ no, it isn't. ] Since Varian's already seen you with the hood and no heels, we'll skip those. Is makeup a thing we can do or nah?

Yang.

[She wont smother her but she will smack her with a pillow. She still needed to talk with her.]

Wait? I'm not allowed to wear my hood and boots? That's not fair! Those are like my favorite things in the world.

...Fine. I guess if I'm not allowed to wear my hood you might as well just do what you want.

[ yang could always offer advice from the beyond. ruby being benevolent enough to spare her, she'll just giggle in response even as she gets a face full of pillow. alright, alright, she'll be serious. ]

No, no, I'm saying we can skip putting you in something other than hood and heels. He likes you just the way you are which is a good thing. No need to dress up all fancy.

Buuuuuuuut, he's gonna lose his mind if he sees you in make up. Just a little, it won't be anything crazy!

[She only expects Yang to be as serious as the Rose-Xiao Long-Branwen family can be. ...Which in reality is not a whole lot.

She let's out a breath of relief that they don't have to do anything too extreme. She was a girl who was very comfortable in her own style.]

Oh okay-That's good. I think I can manage that. We can go find some things on the weekend maybe? It's a good thing Weiss isn't here. She probably would have taken this to the extreme.

[Wow. Gosh. She's just going to steal the pillow back to bury her own face in. She was not used to thinking about things like this.]

Just a little. We've got a deal.

[ yang would never want to push ruby too far out of her comfort zone, especially not for something like this. dates are supposed to be fun! can't have fun if you can barely walk around. ]

Weiss would have put you in a really long lacy dress. You know, the kind that she probably wore to all her social events back in Atlas. We'll pick out something that isn't "old, rich boring people" appropriate and way more fun.

[ she grins wide, the light in her eyes a touch dangerous. ruby rose has made a grievous error in agreeing to just one of yang's demands. ]

Deal!

[It's for these reasons that Yang is the absolute best sister in the whole wide world.]

Ugh- I mean it's one thing for Weiss to be all fancy pantsy I'm all high class and junk but it's another thing when we she tries to infect all of us with it too.

As long as it's fun and I can walk around. I'm okay with th-

[Ruby was just about to agree to another one of Yang's demands when she noticed that look in her eyes. She suddenly felt a pang of dread and knew she had to act fast to get out of whatever dangerous situation Yang was now allowed to put her into.]

[Or she could finish agreeing to the second demand.]

[ ruby will never find another one that's better! ]

Remember when she wanted doilies on all the tables at the dance back at Beacon? Or when she was surprised the DJ didn't have any waltzes on their playlist? [ she rolls her eyes, tone full of fondness and bittersweet nostalgia. it's only been a year since then, but their time at beacon before it fell feels like a dream, the carefree and lazy days punctuated by mundane complications. a pop quiz, a sudden thunderstorm during training, a dance. if not for the pictures from beacon, it'd be hard to believe they'd ever gone there at all. ]

Fun and easy to walk around in, got it. I've already got ideas.

[ RIP varian. ]
