Q&A
What does family mean to you and who do you consider a part of your family?
Kinda deep for a first question, isn’t it? At least buy a girl dinner first. [ yang leans back in her chair, hands linked behind her head. not that she minds the question, but it’s been a very long forty-eight hours and she’d like to collapse into the nearest bed pronto without playing 21 questions. still, these people were nice enough to pluck her out of the literal void. she can play along for now. ]
Family are the people who stick around when times get hard. You can count on them for anything, big or small. Dad and Uncle Qrow give me advice when I need it, everyone in team RWBY--Ruby, Weiss, and Blake, I mean--keep me level headed. And that’s not even mentioning team ORNJ--uh, Oscar, Ren, Nora, and Jaune. Sorry to dump all these names on you, [ she says with an apologetic grin. ] All of us have been through...a lot.
[ her smile fades as her gaze drops to the floor, heaving a heavy sigh. they’ve trained together, won stupid food fights together. lost loved ones together, faced down terrors unimaginable together. at this point, she can’t think of a life without any of her extended teammates by her side. ]
We’ll probably go through even harder stuff in the future. Sort of comes with the “saving the world” territory. But we all push each other to be better people. [ yang finally looks up, all signs of weariness replaced with determination. ] When the chips are down, I know we’ll all have each others’ backs.
Tell us about what kind of pet is ideal to you and why.
Dogs, of course! [ phew, an easy question. yang practically lights up at the prospect of talking about one of her favorite animals in the whole world. she counts off the reasons why they’re the brothers’ perfect creatures on her fingers, ] They’re friendly, always happy to go outside on runs with you no matter how early it is, fuzzy, adorable...
Oh, and they know exactly when you’re feeling down, too. Me and Ruby’s dog back at home won’t leave you alone until you’re smiling. Dad says it’s Zwei’s sixth sense. [ yang smiles at the memory of the best boy in the world. ] He’s the best.
Tell us about a defining event in your life that you think influenced who you are today.
[ whatever joy yang is radiating dissipates upon hearing the question. the answer that jumps to mind isn’t something she thinks influenced her. she knows it’s done far more than that, turning her life literally upside down. but the thing is, it’s not all her story to tell. most of it is blake’s and she isn’t here to tell it. bringing one of her partner’s darkest secrets to light in front of strangers is unthinkable, and while yang is mostly an open book, she doesn’t want to give away too many of her own, either.
she stuffs her scroll into a jacket pocket, teeth worrying at the inside of her jaw. this is doable if she sticks to the basics. ]
Losing my arm. Sure you noticed this. [ she gives a half-hearted wave with her right arm, the metal of the prosthetic gleaming in the light. ] I used to go to a Huntsmen Academy. Beacon. It got attacked by the people we’re trying to save the world from, and during the attack, my partner went off to go handle something on her own. I leave her to face it alone. What kind of partner would I be if I did? So I went after her.
[ it comes back in a rush. the swarms of grimm, the fire and smoke, the screams of people as they tried running from the chaos. yang takes a deep, steadying breath, slowly counting to four in her head as she exhales. It’s okay. It’s all okay. ]
When I found her, she was on the ground. [ her jaw flexes and she continues, haltingly, ] She was hurt pretty bad. Someone she knew was standing over her. He was the one who’d done it and when he noticed me, Blake gave me this look and--.
[ yang’s voice breaks and she takes another deep breath, labored and shuddery. gods, she hates talking about this. ] He stabbed her in the side. All because he knew I was there. Just to hurt her.
Everything’s fuzzy after that. I think I yelled? I do know I jumped in and he drew his sword. Then it all goes black. ...the doctors told me later it was my body going into shock from getting my arm cut off.
I don’t regret what I did, [ she says, shoulders squared and tone suddenly firm. ] If I had to go back and do it again, I would, no question. Anything’s worth Blake being safe. [ and just like that, her entire demeanor droops again, hands folded in her lap. ] But getting better was...hard. Yeah, the physical therapy and pain meds were rough, but those weren't even the hardest part, you know? A part of me was gone. Just like that.
[ yang lapses into silence, glancing off to the side, left thumb rubbing a smooth-looking portion of the heel on her right hand. ] Ruby left to go save the world, Uncle Qrow went after her, and I laid in bed and stared into space. I didn’t want to do anything. Didn’t want to think about anything. [ she doesn’t want to get into the nightmares. so she won’t. ] Eventually, I started getting up and around and even got my prosthetic, but putting it on felt wrong. Everyone wanted me to get back to “normal,” but my normal was totally different. Before I lost my arm, I could do anything and after it felt like…. I dunno. Like the world was crushing me. I couldn’t stand it.
It took a long time--and a few good people--to help me realize that just because I lost something didn’t mean I was lost forever. Bouncing back is what I do best. Recovery happens at my own pace. So if recovery means approaching my problems differently or being more direct with people then that’s what I’ll do.
[ she takes a deep breath and smiles, wan but genuine. ] I will always be my own best healer. And, hey, look at me now. Better than ever.
Adult characters only: How would your ten-year-old self react to you now?
Well, ten-year-old me would be kinda surprised at this, [ yang huffs, a smile slowly curling up the corners of her mouth, ] and that it can shoot bombs. Heck, it still surprises nineteen-year-old-me and I’m the one who asked Dr. Polendina all about what Arm 2.0 could do.
I don’t think past me would ever have seen my life going this way, but I think she’d be happy we’re a Huntress. [ like pyrrha. like mom. like a hero. ] Protecting people from harm was her dream and now she can. I mean, I can. We can? [ she laughs and scratches at the back of her head. ] This is getting confusing.
And, [ her smile gets wicked at the edges, ] ten-year-old me would lose her mind once she finds out I know how to ride a motorcycle and owned one for a little bit. Actually, do those exist here?
[ a beat of silence. ] ...can I get one?

Character Info
Name: Yang Xiao Long
Canon: RWBY
Canon Point: the end of Volume 7, immediately post “The Enemy of Trust”
Age: 19
Background: Here’s her history section over at the RWBY wiki.
Personality: Yang is one of those girls who is always a shoo-in to win “Most Popular” at the end of the school year. She tends to be wherever the action is, whether that’s on purpose or by total accident. Big party? She got invited by about 4 different people. Accidentally start a bar fight and be there when it explodes only seconds after winning said fight? Duh, she’s there. In either situation, Yang can be found in the thick of it with her characteristic optimism and incredibly bad puns. In the first volume of the show, she describes herself as a thrill seeker who wants to take on the major task of becoming a Huntress for the ability to travel the world, repeatedly risk her life for the simple joy of it, and kick ass at the same time. What part of the job isn’t there to like?
Yet, that’s only part of the reason she wants to become a Huntress. Yang wants a place to belong, a place that she can always come back to. Abandoned by her mother at a young age, she found herself the sole caretaker of her younger half-sister when their father had an emotional breakdown after her adoptive mother died while on a Huntress mission. Her uncle, grief-stricken and constantly away for work, was in no place to provide emotional support, either. She found herself emotionally adrift without an adult presence to guide her.
She journeys into the woods with her sister in tow during this period in an effort to find her mother. Yang goes farther and farther, carrying her sister in a wagon, from home until she can no longer remember where they are. Gripped with despair, they are attacked by a Grimm, a creature attracted to negativity, and are almost killed until they are saved in the nick of time by their uncle. It’s then that she realizes that she has a responsibility to those who depend on her. As such, Yang is fiercely loyal to her friends and family and would do anything to ensure their safety. Even if “anything” may be a little bit wild.
Before the fall of Beacon, Yang is a “sink or swim” kind of learner. In fact, she was described to her voice actresses as someone who would push someone into a pool so they learn how to swim. If there’s something or someone in her way, she’ll punch through because she is Yang Xiao Long. If she can’t then who can? That all changes when she loses her right arm at the end of Volume 3. Her weapon, her school, her friends, her partner...all gone in the blink of an eye.
Yang sinks into a depression for months, trapped in a spiral of PTSD from losing her arm and depression from losing everything dear to her. Her time spent recuperating at home eventually teaches Yang to fight smarter, not harder; think around the obstacles in her path rather than try to blaze through with abandon. She leaves to find her sister with a renewed sense of purpose and self. Where she may have desperately seeked her birth mother’s approval when they finally meet at the beginning of volume 5, she firmly says she doesn’t need explanations or reconciliation. All she wants to do is find and protect those that she cares about most.
While Yang parts with her mother on less than ideal terms, she does take away an important lesson: always ask the right questions, especially when something seems too good to be true. She is more than happy to fight on behalf of those who can’t fight themselves, but is quicker to call bullshit where she sees it and push for the truth. If she’s meant to fight around the problem then she wants a full picture of what the problem entails. She isn’t above defying a direct order from a superior if it doesn’t fit her idea of what’s right, either. Sticking to your guns is just as important as doing the right thing.
At the end of the day, Yang is your cool older sister who knows where all the good bands are playing this weekend, but is more than happy to blow off her plans to play video games with you if you’re feeling cruddy. She’s got your back.
Powers:
Aura: The manifestation of one’s soul in RWBY. It can be used for defense, offense, or healing, but it does degrade over time in a combat situation. One’s Aura naturally recharges with rest. Aura also powers an individual’s Semblance. You can find more info about Aura at the wiki.
Semblance: Each major character in RWBY has a Semblance, a special power unique to them alone once it’s activated. Yang’s Semblance Burn! allows her to store the energy she’s received while being attacked and redirect it twice as hard. Her eyes also turn red once it’s activated. Here’s more information about Yang’s particular Semblance here.
Training: Yang is a fully licensed Huntress, the RWBY world’s equivalent of a monster hunter. She went to school for it and everything. As such, she’s proficient with related skills like tracking, camping, and basic first aid. She’s incredibly strong and has been shown lifting/throwing creatures and objects that are easily twice her weight.

Backtagging: Totally! Just hit me up if you want to backtag and we can make it happen. Feel free to poke me if you'd like to continue an older thread, as well!
Threadhopping: Go for it.
Fourthwalling: I'd rather not, but we could maybe work something out if we talk first.
Offensive subjects (elaborate): None really.
[IC]
Hugging this character: Absolutely. She loves hugs.
Kissing this character: Yep!
Flirting with this character: Yep. She'll flirt back and be terrible at it.
Fighting with this character: 100%. Let's rumble.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity):Yes, within a limit. Yang has a natural healing ability that will patch up most things, but it does run out after repeated use. I'd like to avoid anything so severe that she'd lose another limb.
Killing this character: Let's talk this out.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Let's talk first.
Warnings: discussion of parental abandonment, death, loss of a limb, and depression may come up in a deep conversation. If you're uncomfortable with that, feel free to drop a comment and I'll avoid anything you mention in the thread. All comments will be screened.
